Toby Vann, founder of Comfort & Spice at the Hazelwood Brew House

A Lifetime of Curiosity, Served on a Plate

Before founding Comfort & Spice, Toby Vann spent decades building things: performance art, digital products, marketing campaigns, geodesic structures, businesses, and communities.

Along the way, he developed a habit of collecting ideas, recipes, techniques, and flavors from wherever he found them.

Originally from Florida, Toby made New York City his home base for more than 30 years, while work and curiosity took him around the world. He moved to Pittsburgh in 2019 and found a city whose food culture still leaves room for experimentation, personality, and community.

Comfort & Spice is where those experiences finally came together. The menu begins with familiar comfort foods and then expands outward, borrowing inspiration from cultures, cuisines, and traditions from around the world. Not fusion for fusion’s sake. Not food designed to impress social media. Just dishes that are both recognizable and unexpected.

Comfort & Spice was born in breweries and still has a little pop-up in its blood. We have a home base, but we are always eager to pack up the food and come to you, whether that means an office lunch, a private party, a community gathering, or something we haven’t done before.

Inspired by the World. Grounded in Comfort.
